Democratic innovation

Brussels’ 7th Deliberative Committee has officially begun. Last night, at the Brussels Parliament, sixty people – 45 citizens selected by lottery and 15 members of parliament – gathered for the first time for the inaugural session. The central topic of debate for the coming weeks: cleanliness and waste management in Brussels.
Starting today and continuing through the end of the process, What About Dem will be present at every stage to cover, analyze, and explain what is happening in this committee.
Journalistic coverage session by session
Maéva Lafleur will attend all of the committee’s sessions. She will write short articles published throughout the sessions, accessible to anyone who wishes to follow the debates but cannot attend in person. At the end of the process, a comprehensive narrative report will chronicle the entire journey: the discussions, the tensions, the progress, and the voices of the participating citizens.
A series of short videos to demystify participatory democracy
At the same time, Joseph Zaarour is launching a series of educational short videos. The idea: 60 seconds to understand what a deliberative committee is, how it works, and why it matters to every resident of Brussels. There is the first video.
Because democracy should not be reserved for insiders. It is something to be lived, observed, and shared.
